Eleven minutes

I have been meaning to write this article since the 17th of September.  I don’t know why it has taken me so long to put this great story to paper. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I don’t know much about the world of running. I did run track for a couple of years in high... READ MORE >

Investing in our relationships

Anyone who knows me knows that I love the world of sports. However, my love for sports doesn’t outweigh my passion for striving to live a life of integrity. Teaching about integrity is the very reason why I love sports so much. Thejourney of a sports season can teach young student athletes the values of selfdiscipline, hard work, respect for... Flag football on Lyle Anderson Field

This past week, the youth football program came to an end with their final games “under the lights” on Lyle Anderson Field. Chris Goettl, who runs the flag football program, does a terrific job of organizing the event. Nearly 40 kids participated in the program this year as Goettl and his fellow coaches created four very evenly matched teams. For... READ MORE >

Homecoming nostalgia

Last week was Homecoming week at Cook County High School. Homecoming is a week that reinforces to me everything that is exciting and positive about attending high school. Homecoming is made up of many things, but what stood out to me this year was the camaraderie of the student body throughout the week; the excitement for one another’s activities; the... READ MORE >

Big fish in a small pond

The great thing about being a student-athlete in Cook County is that there are plenty of opportunities to participate in athletics. There are not any tryouts and no one has to worry about “making the cut.” Every athlete that comes out for a sport can make the team if he or she sticks with it. For a small town, Cook... The Boys of Fall

This past weekend I was outside and could just smell my favorite season of the year. I love the fall. The weather cools off, the leaves change colors, and the smell of a football field on Friday night is tough to beat. A fall weekend seems as close to heaven on earth as I will ever find. Earlier this summer... READ MORE >

Junior Varsity football beats Duluth Marshall

Cook County’s Junior Varsity football team played in its first game of the season this past Tuesday evening. The Vikings faced the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers in an early season match-up on the gridiron. The Vikings’ roster this season largely consists of freshmen and sophomores so this was a chance to get some much-needed playing time. In a tune-up before the... READ MORE >

What we could learn from Tiger Woods

Of all the sports stories in the recent past, it would be hard to argue that Tiger Woods’ downfall isn’t the largest of all sports-related stories. It is too bad that someone’s moral downfall is a huge story, but people in America love to see people fall as much as they love to see the underdog win. If you don’t... READ MORE >

Football season begins

I smell freshly cut grass and see the grass stains starting to accumulate. Football season must be right around the corner. While everyone is watching intently to see whether or not Brett Favre is returning to the Minnesota Vikings, I am looking forward to the start of another Cook County Viking football season. While I love the summer, there is... READ MORE >

Does winning determine your kid’s experience?

As a varsity coach of both basketball and football, the coaching staff and I try to put as competitive a team on the court or field as possible. The objective of competing in sports is really simple: score more points than the other team. The goal is to win. However, I think something has been lost in translation in our... READ MORE >
