Devil Track Walleyes
Cory Christianson | July 14, 2018
Flying over the lake with a jet pack has not been the only hot topic this week on Devil Track Lake. Walleyes are biting, and anglers are taking advantage of the quick fishing each evening before the sun settles on the horizon. Tourists staying at our lodge have been getting into the evening bite on Devil Track by trolling Rapala... READ MORE >
Hydro Flight at Skyport Lodge
Cory Christianson | July 07, 2018
The summer heat has arrived, at least for those living inland, and Devil Track Lake has been busy with boaters cooling off on the water. High humidity and drastic temperature changes between downtown Grand Marais and the surrounding inland areas have been causing some intense fog especially over Lake Superior. This week we celebrate our nation’s independence with a firework... READ MORE >
The buzz of summer
Cory Christianson | June 30, 2018
The first days of summer have been hot and muggy with an occasional rainstorm, which are ideal conditions for breeding mosquitoes. Swarms of dragonflies have been working the shorelines sucking up hundreds of those pesky little bloodhounds, but they are no match to the massive population of mosquitoes that erupt after each summer rain. Mosquitoes come with the territory, and... READ MORE >
Golf or fish?
Cory Christianson | June 23, 2018
The rains have subsided leaving a muggy, and buggy, mess in their wake as the grass and leaves are exploding with life. Wildflowers are knee high and blooming in some of the more wooded areas as the weather settles into a slightly more stable pattern this week. June is traditionally some of the best fishing of the year since fish... READ MORE >
March of the turtles
Cory Christianson | June 16, 2018
Living amongst wildlife allows us to witness annual events that occur naturally, despite the influences of human development. Roads, buildings, and carbon footprints affect nature’s course in a multitude of ways, yet somehow “many” plants and animals manage to adapt and survive. One of my favorite events is watching the turtles make their journey from the swamps to the soft... READ MORE >
School’s Out
Cory Christianson | June 09, 2018
You might have noticed a little extra energy from Cook County kids this week since school is out for summer break. The next 90 days will be filled with a variety of activities for our little ones including: basketball camp, T-ball practice, riding at the skate park, and swimming in the lake. Summer break was always exciting for me as... READ MORE >
Memorial Fishing Report
Cory Christianson | June 02, 2018
Fishing reports varied greatly depending on where anglers decided to drop a line this past holiday weekend. Tourists flooded the Gunflint Trail and Grand Marais area trying to beat the heat wave happening in the metro area. There was a major temperature difference between Devil Track Lake and downtown Grand Marais this holiday. Lake Superior kept the city temperature in... READ MORE >
Slow green-up
Cory Christianson | May 26, 2018
The woods are reluctantly turning green this week as leaves begin to sprout from tree limbs and the grass, although spotty, begins to grow. Conditions are dry, and there is very little precipitation forecast for Cook County to help aid the green-up and hopefully curb the current fire danger. When Smokey the Bandit says, “high or extreme fire danger” it... READ MORE >
Fishing Opener
Cory Christianson | May 19, 2018
The sun was shining but opening day had a chill in the air that forced my crew to return home to add another layer of clothing. Devil Track Lake was ice covered only three short days prior to the fishing opener on Saturday, and the occasional miniature iceberg floating around the lake made it feel more like the Bering Sea... Open water opener
Cory Christianson | May 12, 2018
The million-dollar question of the week, “Is the ice going to be gone by the opener?” has become a little easier to answer after yesterday’s rain. Devil Track Lake had only receded 20 or 30 feet from the shoreline until the slow rainfall flooded, and eventually sunk the remaining ice patch that covered the lake. I was surprised to wake...
