Tails from the Trail
Cory Christianson | April 03, 2010
If you have been one of the brave few to risk fishing this past week, I certainly hope it was worthwhile. We saw a few ATVs on Gunflint Lake, which is down to six inches of ice. I honestly cannot tell you if the fish are biting or not, because I have not been trying. The Cross River is completely... READ MORE >
TAILS from the TRAIL
Cory Christianson | March 27, 2010
Thelakes are melting very fast up here. Gunflint has already separated from the shore with three feet of open water on the north side in front of the old Moosehorn Bed and Breakfast. The Cross River is showing signs of open water, and Seagull Creek is flowing as well. We are still seeing some ice anglers up here, but the... READ MORE >
Flooded lakes

The economy is not my field of expertise, but it seems like things are at least starting to move in the right direction. The guiding calendar for the summer is beginning to take shape and it looks like this could be a much better summer than the previous two. I have not talked to many lodge owners, but if I... Marching into spring

It was a beautiful weekend on the Gunflint Trail and the wife and I decided to celebrate her 30th birthday at the cabin. Saganaga was busy with anglers on both the Minnesota and Canadian sides. Fishing was much better than the week before and the girls actually laid out in the sun while trying to catch a trout. If you... READ MORE >
Eelpout Action

We could not have asked for a prettier day for a Trout Derby last weekend. The fishing was not as hot as the weather, but it was a lot of fun to see so many people on the lake. I ran down to the east end hoping to find a fish that had not seen so many baits dangling, but... READ MORE >

ThisSunday, February 28, the Trout Derby hosted by the Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club will be held on Gunflint Lake. The actual contest goes from 9:00 – 12:00 and there is a raffle for all the members who show up. I am told that everyone usually wins a prize and it is a really good time. Thebiggest trout caught during this... READ MORE >
Moose are on the loose
Cory Christianson | February 20, 2010
It has been a pretty mild winter so far with very few good snowstorms. We received about three inches this week and it has been just enough to keep the trails in good shape. Many of the smaller lakes are getting pretty slushy, but the bigger lakes have been very easy to navigate. In fact there have been a lot... READ MORE >
Trophy laker on Saganaga
Cory Christianson | February 13, 2010
The lake trout bite has been a little off this week. Saganaga has had the best reports for both action and size. I spent Saturday on Gunflint Lake with four anglers and only managed to find a couple of fish. Pretty slow in my book, but some other fishermen I spoke with were having even worse luck. Canada is now... READ MORE >
Beargrease on the Trail
Cory Christianson | February 06, 2010
At press time, the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon mushers were arriving at the Trail Center checkpoint. Trail Center has provided these mushers and their handlers with very affordable hot meals and free overnight accommodations for quite a few years. They stay open all night so that even the latest arriving racers and handlers can still get dinner and be... READ MORE >
Mangy wolf

The recent snowfall has excited everyone on the Trail. As of Monday, we have received about 8-10 inches up here and it seems to continue falling. It started out being very wet, but has turned into some really good snow for all of our winter activities. Fishing has been very good through the warm spell, but is expected to get... READ MORE >
