Chill in the Air
Cory Christianson | August 28, 2010
Just like that…an early taste of fall with cold, 20-mph winds this week. Monday was windy, but it was a hot wind from the south. Tuesday, it turned from the northwest and got pretty cold. The fish were scattered and hard to find. We caught walleyes in eight feet of water and we caught walleyes in 32 feet of water.... READ MORE >
Berries to Bears

The weather finally took a cool turn and the wind that followed the cold snap had a lot of gust to it. A few trees were downed on Sunday and Monday, especially in the Seagull area. This will be an ongoing event with every wind storm since more and more half-burnt Jack Pines are beginning to lose their strength. It... READ MORE >
Minnesota weather

Minnesotans love to talk about the weather and lately it has been hot and muggy. Unfortunately this is slip bobber time and it is anything but comfortable anchoring the boat when it is 85 degrees. I find myself moving a lot from spot to spot even if the fish are still biting, just to cool off. Swimming is actually sounding... READ MORE >
Wolf pups and Mother Nature
Cory Christianson | August 07, 2010
Thepup wolf population has really grown this year. In the past week I have seen multiple pups in different areas along the Gunflint Trail. I got tired of writing about the wolves that were basically living with us this past winter and here I am doing it again. I did a little research and found that pups are born both... READ MORE >
Berry madness

July has slipped away much like June with the exception of a few showers. The days are hot and the evenings are a little balmy. Perfect weather for the mosquito population to thrive. This has not seemed to slow down the berry pickers at the end of the Trail. I cannot remember seeing so many people parked along the shoulders... READ MORE >
Ego Maniacs

The lightning storms and violent rains we have experienced up here lately have made fishing a little bit difficult.Three days this week were so windy that we were reduced to about 20 percent of the lake calm enough to fish on. The winds were blowing around 20 – 30 mph and the wave heights were in the three to four... READ MORE >
Staring at Bobbers
Cory Christianson | July 17, 2010
The fishing has really picked up since last week on Saganaga and the walleyes are being found on most rock piles. I like to slip bobber fish in these spots—when the wind allows it—because many of them are very small places and you get a lot more time in the strike zone. Leeches work just fine under a bobber and... READ MORE >
Mother Nature to the rescue

The Chik Wauk Museum opening was an outstanding success. Theresponse from the people who attended say that it surpassed anything they could possibly have expected. I was guiding and unable to attend the event, but I can tell you there were plenty of cars in the parking lot at County 81. Pat Shunn would have been very pleased to see... READ MORE >
Hero to zero

This past week of guiding has been a rollercoaster of fishing. One day they are jumping into the boat and the next day there is very little action of any kind. Guiding is a funny business to be in. If you slam fish, like we have been in Northern Light Lake, the customers leave thinking you are some kind of... READ MORE >
Knee high by the Fourth of July
Cory Christianson | June 26, 2010
In Iowa, farmers can judge a corn stalk’s progression by this simple rule of thumb. On the Gunflint Trail it pertains to the daisies growing alongside the road and it means that the hawg walleyes are moving out to the reefs and rock piles. I stubbornly spent all day trying to find some action on the reefs, but I should... READ MORE >
