The midday bite

I woke up at 5:30 this morning with a fully illuminated bedroom. Our picture window displayed the brightest moon I have ever seen. It was so big and detailed that I felt I could have touched it. The frost-covered landscape reflected the moonlight to every corner of our house, leaving few shadows. Twenty minutes later the moon set on the... READ MORE >
Trail tourism gaining speed
Cory Christianson | February 04, 2012
The clear starry nights and bright moon have created some beautiful evening scenery this week. . I am no expert on the stars, but I know this is a great time of the year for gazing at them. It is also a perfect time to go on a horse-drawn sleigh ride at Okontoe. They know their constellations and often stop... READ MORE >
It’s a boy!

My wife, Rachelle, and I have successfully adapted to parenthood while our lives have evolved into a world of cartoons and dirty diapers. I like Sponge Bob, but young Sophia still prefers her Baby Einstein videos. The female to male ratio in the household is currently three to one, including Maggie our wiener dog, and I am beginning to feel... READ MORE >
Inconsistent ice

Fishing on thin ice was the hot topic this trout opener on the Gunflint Trail. Many anglers hit the hard water this weekend with trout on their brains and dangerous ice under foot. Lakes were ranging from 24 inches of good clear ice down to 3 inches, and everything in-between. Gunflint has only been frozen over for a few weeks,... READ MORE >
Waiting for winter

Everyone is still waiting for winter to happen this year and we are already halfway through January. I just sold a snowmobile last week, and the buyer could not even take it for a test drive. It was parked in town and there was no snow in sight. I guess I must have an honest face since he bought it... READ MORE >
Gone fishing

I finally “broke the ice” on this winter’s fishing season with a fair amount of success. My friend Roger Campbell and I decided to brave the high winds and test out my ice fishing equipment last week. Everything was working great, and we managed to throw a couple of walleyes on the ice as well. Early season can be great... READ MORE >
Duluth Staycation

Last week I was bragging about completing the outside work for this season, and I was wrong. We are now building a floating dock on top of the ice on Sea Gull Lake. Believe it or not, that is the easiest way to build one. I was worried about the ice since the dock we are constructing will be very... READ MORE >
Ready for snow
Cory Christianson | December 10, 2011
Winter is upon us and we are ready for it. There is not very much snow up here yet, but most of the lakes that are visible from the road have frozen over. Poplar finally closed up last week so I would imagine that Gunflint and Seagull will not be far behind. That does not mean the ice is safe... READ MORE >
Sophia turns one

Thanksgiving vacation was a much needed break from the routine. We traveled to the Cities and spent a few days hanging out with our families, ate a lot of great food, and spent some money. The weather was much warmer than I had anticipated with temperatures reaching 58 degrees on Thursday. People were actually golfing! Rachelle visits her family more... READ MORE >
Last chance

Hunting is not much different than fishing. Generally speaking we fish a lake using the same techniques found in hunting. Finding the right terrain and habitat are the first goals. Stalking and taking are the second goals. In the past two weeks of deer season, I have learned more about deer than I would have ever thought imaginable. So far... READ MORE >
