Deep freeze

Brrrr! The temperatures have not been above zero for a few days now and it is downright cold out there. In the 10 minutes it took me to fill the outdoor boiler with firewood my exposed cheeks started to burn. I am talking about the cheeks on my face of course. Neither of our two vehicles wanted to start Monday... READ MORE >
Walleyes on the trout opener
Cory Christianson | January 19, 2013
If you were able to get out and drill a hole on the ice last Saturday, then you earned it. The weather was not nice. Rain showers in the morning that turned into snow flurries backed by 20 mile-per-hour winds. Not my idea of a comfortable day on the water. Despite the unpleasant weather there were a fair member of... READ MORE >
Everyone in the woods
Cory Christianson | January 12, 2013
It’s only been two weeks of Boundary Waters trout fishing and I am already tired of it. Don’t get me wrong, fishing for trout is more fun than most of the alternatives right now but I am ready for all of the lakes to be open. So many lakes and so little time. Hiking in the B-Dub to fish for... READ MORE >
Great BWCA trout opener
Cory Christianson | January 05, 2013
Every once in awhile Mother Nature decides to throw a bone in our direction and bless us with some beautiful winter weather. The fishing conditions for the BWCA trout opener last weekend were perfect. The mild temperatures and thick overcast were a nice combination for a comfortable day on the ice. Light snow cover made hiking across the lake a... READ MORE >
On the road again

The ice fishing season is upon us and I am getting pretty excited. The few times I have been ice fishing this year have not been very impressive, but that will change. During the early ice angling season, when the trout season is closed, an angler needs to be creative to find some good fishing on the Gunflint Trail. Smaller... READ MORE >
Good ice bad fishing
Cory Christianson | December 22, 2012
The smaller lakes on the Gunflint Trail are averaging about four inches of ice, which is safe enough to walk on. Roger Campbell and I spent a few hours last Sunday fishing for walleyes and found a consistent four inches of ice all over the lake. The weather was nice, a little windy, but the walleyes were finicky to say... READ MORE >
Moose on the loose
Cory Christianson | December 15, 2012
The ground is covered in snow and the lakes are making ice. Overnight temperatures are dipping into the single digits and you can hear the lakes cast a haunting vibrato across the night air as the water freezes and expands. It sounds like aliens are landing to fulfill the end of the Mayan calendar. Not really, but it does mean... READ MORE >
Bad ice on the Trail lakes
Cory Christianson | December 08, 2012
Winter is here. I have said it three times already and I am fairly confident that it is now true. The 45 degree weather over the weekend took care of most of the snow up here. There is still a little and the rainfall made everything wet and muddy. It was hard to watch the snow disappear but it should... READ MORE >
Old Man Winter is here
Cory Christianson | December 01, 2012
It seems like every time we leave town for a few days, it snows. So far this has proven to be more predictable than a meteorologist’s forecast. Fortunately we have nice friends and neighbors to help take care of things while we are gone. It was great to see that the driveway was plowed and the wood boiler burning when... READ MORE >
Raining deer
Cory Christianson | November 24, 2012
I finally shot a deer. Last Friday I took a day off of work to hunt and was rewarded with a nice doe. She weighed in around 175 pounds and is processed and frozen. I am a fisherman at heart, as you already know, but I really enjoyed hunting deer on the Gunflint Trail. Fishing is often described as hours... READ MORE >
