Trout opener
Cory Christianson | January 18, 2014
This Saturday, January 18 is the official Minnesota trout opener and I could not be more excited to get outside and start enjoying this winter. The weather has been so cold that I was forced to cancel a couple of days last week, so hopefully we can make up for the bad weather with a pleasant opening weekend. Slush has... READ MORE >
Surviving the cold
Cory Christianson | January 11, 2014
If this were the first winter I had ever spent on the Gunflint Trail I might have invested some more thought into choosing our residence. When temperatures get this cold everything stops working, including tourism. The Gunflint Trail hosts a variety of different winter activities that attract a myriad of tourists, but it is hard to enjoy the outdoors when... READ MORE >
The grosbeaks are back
Cory Christianson | January 04, 2014
One of my chores each morning before leaving for work is to refill the bird feeders with black sunflower seeds and occasionally replace the frozen blocks of suet. This week’s temperatures at daybreak have been around 15 below zero each morning making it a chilly task in the early hours, but the birds need to eat. The grosbeaks are friendly... READ MORE >
More moose on the Gunflint
Cory Christianson | December 28, 2013
Last week I talked about the number of moose being seen on the Gunflint Trail and every day since then I have spotted at least two wandering along the roadway. It amazes me how they like to return to the same few places to lick the road. There was a big bull that was down on all fours, and not... READ MORE >
Moose herds on the roam

If seeing a moose on the Gunflint Trail is still on your bucket list, you might consider going for an evening ride. In the past couple of days I have seen a dozen different moose along the Gunflint and they are hanging out in herds from the South Brule to Seagull Lake. It is easy to detect the right area... Off the Trail

The Gunflint Trail lakes are all locked up with ice. Seagull Lake is reported to have about three inches of good ice hiding under a layer of snow and slush and I would have to guess that Gunflint is about the same. Saganaga Lake might also be frozen but it would be wise to wait until Christmas to venture out... READ MORE >
The Wrath of C

Winter storm Cleon is bearing down on the nation this week and it appears that we are going to get a lot of snowfall. The storm has already left a foot of snow on Two Harbors and the second wave of precipitation is expected to bring more. I say, let it snow. Now that I am no longer hunting and... READ MORE >
Skunked

Hunting deer on the Gunflint Trail is a challenge to say the least. This might be hard to believe since there are so many deer along the North Shore’s Highway 61 but once you are “over the hill” it is a completely different story. The Gunflint Trail does not boast an abundance of deer and the vast amount of woods... READ MORE >
Tough hunting

Each week gets a little bit colder as we slip into the holiday season. The average temperatures on the Gunflint Trail have been cold enough to make ice but the high winds are going to keep the bigger lakes open for a while yet. Big winds are very common in the late fall to help stir up the lake water... READ MORE >

The eight-inch snow storm and winter advisory for the Arrowhead of Minnesota this week amounted to only a couple of inches and that is all of the snow we need for now. It seems like the meteorologists were eager to scare us with the threat of snowstorms, but now the forecast looks dry and cold. I am no weather expert... READ MORE >
