Ready for 2015 Trout Opener
Cory Christianson | January 17, 2015
This Saturday marks the opening day of trout season in Minnesota and I am anxious to start seeing some ice shacks on the lake. I used to boast about fishing naked (without shelter) in the winter but anymore I prefer some type of house with heat to spend the day on the ice. A minimum of 12 inches of solid... READ MORE >
Mail Run at Trail Center

Old man winter’s grip got a little tighter this week with wind chills reaching 50 degrees below zero and gusts over 20 miles per hour. The handful of anglers hiking into the B- Dub have been earning the trout being caught and despite the tough conditions, fishing has been good. Duncan and Daniels lakes are two popular destinations for anglers... READ MORE >
B-Dub trout opener

January 1st marks the Boundary Waters Trout Opener for those of you grounded enough to behave on New Year’s Eve. Fishing for trout is a lot more fun if you aren’t nursing a hangover, at least that is my excuse for not going out to the bar anymore. I think Rachelle and I stayed up until 10:30 p.m. last year... Looking like X-Mas

Trail Center re-opened ahead of schedule this week and already there have been some cars in the parking lot. Word travels fast on the Trail, especially when the word involves food or entertainment in December. Sarah will be open regular business hours for breakfast, lunch, and dinner through the winter. She is (like many of us) anticipating a great season... READ MORE >
Our Frozen Forest

The warm weekend nearly melted winter away with balmy temperatures reaching mid 30s on the Gunflint Trail this week. Humid air caused a misty fog to creep over the land during the day while an overnight freeze created a brilliant hoar frost the following morning that was too cool for words to describe— but I’ll try anyway. Imagine an endless... READ MORE >
Tails from the Trail

Tuesdays have become my “stay at home day” with the kids for the winter and so far we have been having a great time inventing activities and reconnecting after a busy summer of guiding. It would be nice to get a little more snow on the ground to play in, but it is hard to complain with temperatures reaching 25... READ MORE >
Gearing up for ice season
Cory Christianson | December 06, 2014
Late November brought sub-zero temperatures, freezing over the smaller lakes which are already showing 6-7 inches of solid ice. We had to replace a water system on West Bearskin Lake after Thanksgiving Day and augered a trench through 7 inches of ice. It was a surprise to see this much solid ice on a lake that has not been frozen... READ MORE >
Tails from the Trail

Winter became a little more real this week with high winds and low temperatures reaching bone-chilling negatives. There were a few pleasant days mixed into the rifle season allowing me to spend some time in the woods hunting, but the clever deer outsmarted me once again. I have a gamut of excuses for failing to produce some venison but the... READ MORE >
Making ice

The unmistakable sound of ice being made rang loud this morning with a reverberating noise that echoed off of Birch Lake’s granite shoreline where I have been working. Finally the wind let up enough this week to start making ice on some of the larger lakes and it is getting me excited to put away the rifle and rev-up my... READ MORE >
Return of the grosbeaks

Who would ever believe that the first major snowstorm of the season has affected a majority of the nation except us? Usually we are on the receiving end of grueling storms and heavy snowfall, but not this time. I wouldn’t say that we have escaped winter’s wrath entirely since overnight temperatures are getting dangerously close to the single digits and... READ MORE >
