Thick ice = Late spring?
Cory Christianson | April 04, 2015
Everyone has been patiently anticipating the spring meltdown that does not appear to be happening. Two weeks ago, driveways that had been plowed were showing gravel and the ground became muddy where melting snow had saturated the low spots. It has been a typical spring until the winter storm threw us right back into winter again this week. I fished... READ MORE >
Spring is in the Air

When the sun decides to make an appearance, so do the ruffed grouse who come wandering out to the roadside to graze in the recently exposed grass along the Gunflint Trail. Spring is in the air and forest critters are coming out of winter hiding to scavenge for food. During the winter months we mostly see snowshoe hare and wolves... READ MORE >
Hanging on to winter

I left Grand Marais this morning with a feeling that spring was already here. Lake Superior’s bright blue waters were rough from the big wind, and the streets were dry without a trace of snow in sight. As I drove a short trip over the hill, I was quickly reminded that winter is holding on for at least another weekend.... READ MORE >
Spring Meltdown

There was a good turnout for the Trout Derby on Gunflint Lake last weekend and there were about a dozen fish turned in. The temperature was warmer than we have had but the wind was annoyingly chilly and kept a lot of folks tight to their shelters whether that was a tent, icehouse, or truck. The Cook County Ridge Riders... READ MORE >
Ice House Fever

I am sad to say that the 2015 Mush for the Cure has been cancelled. It was an honorable fundraiser that exceeded anyone’s expectations and raised a lot of money for a very good cause. The amount of “behind the scene” preparation that went into such an event is simply mind boggling (to say the least) and the people who... READ MORE >
Mid-winter slump

Plowing a road on the ice has proven to be more of a challenge than I anticipated. Our icehouse ended up on Gunflint Lake this year instead of Loon Lake because my plow was not able to move the hard packed snow from the Loon Lake public landing, so we decided to give Gunflint a shot this season instead. The... READ MORE >
Back to real life

Rachelle and I took a much needed vacation from the freezing temperatures (and restless children) to the island of Kauai last week— and it was incredible. The weather was perfect and our accommodations were amazing. I could have been perfectly content whale watching and soaking up the sun from our deck that overlooked the Pacific Ocean, but I am glad... READ MORE >

Something for everyone on Gunflint Lake

Ice fishing got a little tougher this week on Gunflint Lake, but I am not complaining. A few fish a day is still better than getting skunked and we have at least been managing to do that. The reports have been about the same all over the lake from a few different groups of anglers enjoying the warm weather. Warm... READ MORE >
Opening Weekend Update

I spent a couple of half-days fishing on Gunflint Lake this weekend with a fair amount of success. We caught six lake trout each day, nothing big, but the action was nice. Winter fishing is fickle and I am pretty happy seeing some bent rods for a change. We saw some other anglers setting up camp on the west end... READ MORE >
