Runners close season at State Meet

The Viking cross country team headed down to the Minnesota State championship meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield with lots of enthusiasm after a big send-off at school, well wishes from local fans and a couple of neat good luck signs at businesses in Two Harbors. Our expectations were realistic. The girls’ team was second in a section that... READ MORE >

Almost a perfect run

We don’t believe there is such thing as a perfect race, and certainly not a perfect team race, but the Viking cross country team came about as close to perfect as they could at last week’s Section 7A meet in Cloquet. Thiswas the third time we went to the section meet with a legitimate chance of advancing an entire team... READ MORE >

Awful weather—great running for Vikings

We thought the weather had been about as bad as it could get at Hibbing, but it was worse at Proctor. High 30s, windy, overcast and raining. The team just wanted to get in, race and get out. And that is what we did. On the way out, the bus was loaded down with a lot of soggy clothing and... READ MORE >

Scannell And Girls Varsity win at Hibbing

I could get used to this. The girls’ cross country team “three-peated” by easily winning the 13-team Hibbing Invitational for the third year in a row, while Kieran Scannell earned his first varsity win at the same meet. But I know better. Outright wins are rare in cross-country, as every meet involves at least seven teams, and as many as... READ MORE >

Scannell top 10 at Swain, Girls continue march to State

The Swain Invitational Cross Country meet is the classic cross-country event in the Northland. It was started by John Swain, dean of Duluth high school running, and is celebrating its 59th anniversary. I remember watching it when I had barely heard of Grand Marais and Viking Cross Country was years in the future. Now the team was headed to the... READ MORE >

Lots of personal bests at Milaca MegaMeet

When you go to the largest cross-country meet in the US, you rarely come home with any awards.  This year wasn’t any different.  Only Signe Larson and Sonja Peterson brought home top 25 awards (although Ailee Larson and Kieran Scannell were close).  Our varsity girls had our best team place – eighth. Competition included five of the top 10 schools... READ MORE >

Girls repeat at Eveleth Invite XC race

The 41-athlete Viking cross-country team took off Thursday, September 17 for the Golden Bear Invitational in Eveleth. With 11 other Section 7A teams (a little more than half of the Section) it was a great chance to see where we stood early in the season. It didn’t take long to find out, as our highly rated girls’ varsity team was... READ MORE >

Vikings host Cross Country Invitational

The Viking cross country team opened its season at home, hosting Duluth East, Hibbing, Proctor, Carlton and Albrook at the Pincushion Trail system on Thursday, September 3. Although East and Hibbing compete in the big school, AA class, we ran a combined class at this meet, giving the “Davids” a chance to slay the “Goliaths.” We entered this meet excited... READ MORE >

Vikings place well in Polar Junior High Track

A 12-member contingent of the Viking Track team headed down to compete in the Polar League Junior High championships in Barnum on May 6. TheVikings were joined by the 10 other Polar League schools at this large meet. The meet started with the field events. Peter Warren threw the shot 29’10”, good for sixth.
