After loss to Mesabi, Vikings come back with three wins

The Mesabi East Giants came to Grand Marais last Thursday night, January 12, and—despite not being very tall—played like Giants against a Viking team that just couldn’t get going. It wasn’t for lack of effort. The Vikings played hard, but were a step too slow, always half an inch away from coming up with a key rebound. It was just... READ MORE >

Dupre ends quest to climb Denali

Call it Denali deja-vu, but for the second year in a row bad weather forced Grand Marais mountain climber Lonnie Dupre to abandon his attempt to become the first person to summit Mount McKinley (aka Denali) alone in January. Like last year Dupre made good—if not great—early progress in his climb. But once again he was stranded in a small... READ MORE >

Vikings win a thriller over South Ridge

Just when the game against South Ridge couldn’t get any more interesting, just when the tension couldn’t get tighter or nerves more taut, it did. With three seconds to go, a one-point lead, and sophomore guard Jessica Berg-Collman at the foul line shooting one-inone, the game was over. It was fitting for Jessica to have the ball in this situation.... READ MORE >

Vikings beat Cromwell in close contest

Friday, January 6 was a good day for Viking boys’ and girls’ basketball as each team won in Cromwell. The Vikings came out and dominated early, going up by 9 points... READ MORE >

Dupre making excellent time in his Denali climb

Grand Marais mountain climber/adventurer Lonnie Dupre brought in the New Year by spending the day resting at Windy Corner on Mount Denali. Situated at 14,200 feet, Windy Corner isn’t a local hotspot in Alaska. In fact, no one is within several country miles of Dupre unless they fly by. But for Dupre, being alone is different than being lonely, and... READ MORE >

Dupre making progress on Denali

Did he or didn’t he see Santa Claus? Grand Marais resident Lonnie Dupre is trying once again to become the first person to solo climb Mount Denali in the dead of winter, the windiest, coldest, darkest period of the year. Along the way he hopes to chronicle the effects of global warming and experiment with the latest in high tech... READ MORE >

Viking boys 4-1 at Christmas break

With no games or tournaments over Christmas the Vikings boys’ basketball team is busy practicing on their vacation. For the season the team is 4-1, with the one loss to 3A school Esko. While Silver Bay’s hot shooting guard Luke Thun leads the conference in scoring with a 28-point game average, the Vikings have three kids in the top 20.... READ MORE >

Sawtooth Elementary receives noise reduction panels from grant

The Sawtooth Mountain Elementary gym is quieter and brighter now that it is ringed with large, bright blue noise reduction panels. The panels sit high above the reach of little hands but not so high that voices can’t reach them. Sixteen Smurf-blue rectangles were bought with a grant in the amount of $8,500 from the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation. They... READ MORE >
