November is just around the corner, and the Norwegians of Zoar Lutheran Church are preparing for the traditional lutefisk dinner. Literally translated as “lyefish,” lutefisk or lutefish—from the Norwegian lutefisk and the Swedish lutfisk— is a traditional fish preparation and dish consumed in the Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland. During these fall months, Zoar Lutheran has been abuzz with stories of the past and the plans for this year’s dinner on the 12th of November.
Experienced workers Gary and Marsha Hansen have taught others the tasks needed to be done before the day of feasting. Cooked lutefisk has a very mild flavor and although it has a somewhat pronounced odor, it does not much differ from the strong odor of regular fresh cod. In spite of this, people have divided opinions on the deliciousness of the dish, some loving it ardently, others feeling sick just from the smell of it. Some of us call this event the “stinky fish dinner.” To offset some of the above negatives, our cooks will be preparing ham, potatoes, vegetables, coleslaw and lefse as well as pies of several varieties.
It is a giant undertaking. Zoar’s members are praying that the weather will cooperate this year. Unfortunately last year our attendee numbers were down because of an early snow storm. This year, however, the estimates for the number of meals have been calculateded and supplies are ordered. One can watch all the activities with awe. Those watching can appreciate the amount of time being spent on this wonderful work in progress.
Will Zoar be able to sell all of the tickets? For a low cost of $14 for adults and $7 for children under 12, Zoar hopes to add coins to the fuel fund coffers of the church. The walls will be bouncing at Birch Grove Center, Tofte, from 5 to 7 p.m.
And…have you seen the beautiful hand appliquéd quilt made by Polly Erickson? She has donated the quilt to the church for a raffle. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the door and the drawing for the quilt will take place during the dinner. For just $2 a ticket you could bring this exquisite quilt home with you.
