Gary Zinter, FIC, a Thrivent Financial representative in Silver Bay, has been named the 2009 Volunteer of the Year for the Thrivent Financial East Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin Regional Financial Office.

Zinter was selected for his dedication to helping others through volunteerism and service last year. He supported the efforts of Thrivent’s chapter leaders and affiliated congregational coordinators in delivering Thrivent Financial resources to address local needs.

During the year, Zinter’s North Shore Chapter conducted 45 projects, serving people in numerous ways. A total of $87,835 was raised, with $27,593 coming as supplemental funding from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Some funding went to Lutheran churchwomen who made over 700 quilts that were distributed to people in need. Zinter helped organize a group of 13 people who went on a Thrivent Build project to El Salvador with Habitat for Humanity.

“Gary embodies Thrivent Financial’s mission of compassion and caring,” said Tom Young, managing partner of the Thrivent Financial’s regional field office.“He is very deserving of this recognition.”

As a faith-based organization, Thrivent Financial members are organized into local chapters that meet regularly to carry out volunteer projects, educational programs and fundraising events. Zinter advises the North Shore Thrivent Chapter, which serves the North Shore of Lake Superior.

In addition to receiving a 2009 Volunteer of the Year plaque, Zinter was given $1,000 to donate to Lake County DAC Inc., Lake County Ambulance Service, and North Shore Horizons, the charitable organizations of his choice.

Zinter is also automatically included as a nominee for Thrivent Financial’s national Volunteer Excellence Award. National winners will be announced during National Volunteer Week in April.
