The other game matched the Lions with the Lumberjacks at the Rec Park fields. The Lions went down in defeat to the Lumberjacks with the score of 16 – 19. Another close loss for the Lions.
A bright spot for the Lions was the play of Dominic Wilson who caught a pop up in the infield and with the help of Ryan Bilben as catcher made two outs at home plate. The Lumberjacks were helped on their way to victory by the fielding of Chase Gwash at second base. Lions’ coach Dave Furcht said, “He made several plays for outs at second base.”
All the teams are improving, which will make the play offs at the end of the year very exciting.
Twins on top in Little League
Little League had a lighter week of games due to the 4th of July holiday as well. On July 5th, the Twins and Dodgers played a marathon game that took over two and a half hours to complete. It was not a good night for pitchers as both teams were forced to use several different pitchers in an attempt to find outs. The Dodgers got out to a commanding lead and looked to be running away with the game. The Twins never gave up and fought back to take the lead and the game in the end. The final score was an exciting 22 – 21.
The Cubs had a double header on Sunday the 10th. In the first game, the Dodgers were their opponent. The Dodgers started with Ethan Sporn on the mound. Ethan showed that he is one of their top pitchers. The Cubs have a very young and inexperienced pitching staff and it showed in the first match. The Cubs used three different pitchers in an attempt to slow down the bats of the Dodgers. All three pitchers fought hard but had no answer for the Dodgers in this one. It was never close and the Dodgers went home with a big victory.
In the second game, the Cubs faced the Twins. John Ray Mendivil started on the mound for the Twins and the Cubs countered with Andrew Miller Andrew pitched the entire game and is the Cubs most consistent pitcher Andrew pitched very well but it was not enough to hold off the Twins. John Ray pitched three very good innings before handing the ball to Maranda Deschampe who closed out the Cubs There was one highlight for the Cubs. In the last inning of the game, the Twins’ Seth Kemp turned a double play to get the Cubs out of the inning. The Twins have control of the top spot in the league with the Dodgers and the Cubs looking forward to a chance to knock them off in the playoffs.
