We want to thank all who helped make the 2012 Fisherman’s Picnic possible.
First and foremost our gratitude to the Grand Marais Lions Club! The Fisherman’s Picnic has an amazing 83-year history and is a tremendous effort on the part of the Grand Marais Lion’s Club.
A special thank you to the Cook County Sheriff ’s Department, the fire department and city employees for all the extra effort.
Local businesses deserve recognition as well for all of the extra service provided— especially the Java Moose, Harbor Inn and The Pie Place for being so supportive of such a large production on their front steps.
Thank you to the parents of the North Shore Rollers for facilitating log rolling for Grand Marais youth as well as coaching and driving the athletes up the Trail for some extra training sessions at the Atkinson pond. The results are really showing. Our team is amazing!
Our on-site crew including Harmon Hanson (camp crew boss), Byron McLean, Jackson Coleman, Jeffrey Coleman, Jessica Berg-Collman, Damien Zimmer, Sasca Smith and Dylan Deschampe—all were a great help. A special thanks to camp cook Jennifer Hanson for making sure we took time to eat and for all the donut shop runs. The Lumber Camp boss couldn’t make it without two raspberries and a maple to start the workday.
Thanks to Tony Everson and Judd Coleman for use of trucks and trailers; to Berglund Logging for the use of the Wood-Mizer edging machine and to Circle H Timber for trucking logs. Thanks to the judges, timers, and volunteers during competition as well as the athletes who helped tear down Lumber Camp.
We also want to thank our World Champions who participated in making this one of the strongest events in the Midwest. Eight-time World Champion Jenny Atkinson, 6-time World Champion Darron Hudson, 6-time World Champion Shana Martin, 4-time World Champion Brian Duffy, Taylor Bizer, Meredith Ingerbitson and Semi-pro World Champion Jess Berg-Collman.
It takes a lot of people to make a great event like the Fisherman’s Picnic so a big yoho and thank you to all who participated in the effort!

Vilnis Neilands’ most recent letter (again) grossly misrepresents the results of the Phase I Biomass Feasibility Report. The economic figures he cites are from the least economically viable of 14 different scenarios of biomass district heating systems studied.
Obviously, that scenario is not economically feasible, and accordingly, no one is suggesting that we move forward with it. That’s why the study was conducted–to weed out scenarios that don’t make sense.
Other scenarios in the study appear economically promising, which Mr. Neilands must know but fails to mention. Instead, he chooses to spread alarming facts and figures about a biomass district heating scenario that isn’t being considered.
As a community, we are going to have our hands full trying to weigh the pros and cons of an actual biomass district heating proposal. Mr. Neilands is welcome to participate in that process, and his concerns are well taken, but misinformation just confuses the issue.
As for taking umbrage at his “starry-eyed steering the party bus” crack, Mr. Neilands has that wrong too; we kinda liked that.
