The walls are going up which means the Y Community Center will be ready for us this winter. We now have a choice: Cook County residents can continue the negativity and namecalling surrounding the community center issue, OR we can join together in an exciting opportunity that so many small towns would love to be given. Let’s make the most of this opportunity by supporting the Y through our use of the facility. If the vocal minority of dissenting residents remains opposed, the Y may very well struggle. The naysayers will have fulfilled their prophecy—failure.
We have an enthusiastic director, Emily Marshall, who has great ideas for programming that meet the needs of all ages. The children will have swimming lessons, open gym, afterschool programs and, most especially, a place to gather with friends in a safe environment. Teenagers will have regular teen nights with supervised activities geared toward their age group. Parents with young children will have the opportunity to use the facility while their children are at the children’s play area on site. Adults can use the workout room, join fitness classes, walk the indoor track, swim, join water aerobics and Golden Movements.
If cost of a membership is a factor, the Y will work to make it affordable. Having the benefit of the YMCA organization behind us gives more of a stable foundation and the ability to offer more programming choices.
