This past Saturday the Cook County YMCA swim team traveled to Duluth to compete in a big YMCA swim meet, and the local kids produced some great results posting 10 personal best times and a similar number of ribbons.
Mary June had an excellent first meet of the season gaining three great times with a particularly graceful 100 free and a third place in her age group for 50 backstroke.
“We are excited to watch her in future meets,” said Y Director Emily Marshall. “Lexi’s (Surbaugh) improvement just from last week’s meet shows just how hard she has been working on her technique with personal best times in both the 100 IM and 50 breaststroke taking an incredible 4 seconds off both times.
“Her brother Tristan also had a great meet with personal bests (PBs) in both the 50 and 100 free, not to mention an incredible leg in the 4×50-freestyle relay.”
Competing in the same age group as Tristan provided great competition for each other as Hadden Taylor also had a great meet. Hadden took time off of all of his events in the 50 free, 100-backstroke and 100 breaststroke.
One of the most impressive swims of the meet was by Finn Garry who took over 20 seconds off of his 500 meter freestyle time from last week shortly after improving his 100 IM time by 7 seconds from last week.
“It is so great to see hard practice and great focus on technique paying off for our swimmers and I am excited to see our presence at these events grow as the season progresses. As hosts of the meet the Duluth team were also grateful for Steve Surbaugh helping with timekeeping for the meet,” said Marshall.
