On January 23, the YMCA Northern hosted a meet at the Cook County Community YMCA pool. Over 100 swimmers ages 5 to 68 years old came together from Duluth, Superior, and Cook County to compete one last time before heading off to the Northern Sectional Swim Meet on January 30.
Sixteen youth and eight adults were present from the Cook County team. “There were dozens of close races, tons of dropped time, and we even had our first Regional Qualifier at this meet,” said Coach Emily Marshall.
Ella Hedstrom qualified in the 50 breaststroke and now has the opportunity to go to the Regional swim meet in March where she will compete against some of the fastest swimmers from 11 different states in the Midwest.
Coach Marshall said, “She has been working so hard and making a qualifying time is a huge accomplishment.
“Several of our other swimmers are really close to a region time, so it’ll be exciting to see how they perform at Sectionals and State,” said Marshall.
When competing at the Sectional meet, the top three swimmers or relays in each race will advance to the State meet at the University of Minnesota.
