Yes vote would limit human rights

I focus this letter on those of you who are not sure whether or not you feel gay marriage is right, or maybe you just feel a little uncomfortable with the idea of two men and two women being married.

If you vote no, same sex marriage will still be illegal in the state of Minnesota, nothing will change.

If you vote yes, our state’s constitution will permanently ban fellow Minnesotans who are gay or lesbian from ever obtaining the same legal status of heterosexual couples.

At one time in our history, women could not vote, racial segregation was mandated by law and Native Americans were not considered citizens. Clearly, civil rights change over time.

By voting yes, you are cementing this ban into our state’s constitution. Once a constitutional amendment is adopted, it is nearly impossible to change. If you feel uncomfortable with gay marriage, I urge you to vote no. Vote no, not because you condone the lifestyle, but because you don’t want to permanently limit the human rights of fellow Minnesotans.
