The “Y” in Y-Ski stands for youth and that is the focus of the program sponsored by the North Superior Ski and Run Club (NSSRC)—to encourage kids to learn the lifetime sport of cross country skiing. Another year of ski fun for kids and families will be here soon.
Y-Ski sign up and equipment rental for participants will be at the Pincushion Mountain warming building on Sunday, December 6 from 1 – 2 p.m. and Monday, December 7 from 5 – 5:30 p.m.
Y-Ski is held on Sunday afternoons from 1:30-3:00 p.m. at the Pincushion Mountain Trail System starting January 3 and running through February 28.
There is an optional session for the skiers in the advanced groups on Tuesdays after school until 5:00 p.m.
Y-Ski teaches the sport of Nordic skiing in an atmosphere of games, group activities and skiing the wonderful trails at Pincushion. Y-Ski organizer Mike Crook said, “We have a variety of activities including a field trip, special events and a fun kids race.”
Y-Ski is designed for kids from kindergarten through 6th grade – all ability levels are welcomed and accommodated. (Kindergartners need to bring a full-time adult helper, please!)
The fee is only $20 per child, with the charge for each additional child only $10. NSSRC has a wide selection of children’s skis, boots and poles available for rent for the entire winter for a nominal fee of $25 (or $35 for both skate and classic skis). A $100 deposit per set is required which will be returned at the end of the season when the equipment is checked back in.
Mike Crook adds that a full discount (equipment deposit still required) is available to any family with a parent or guardian that participates weekly as a group leader or assistant.
Kids joining Y-Ski for the first time will also receive a Cook County Y-Ski hat!
