The Lake Superior Binational Forum announced Friday, July 19 that a panel of binational judges has named WTIP Community Radio the 2013 recipient of its Environmental Stewardship Awards Program in the U.S. Organization category.
The Binational Forum started an annual awards program in 2004 as a way to recognize and promote the outstanding actions or sustainable initiatives being made by Americans, Canadians and Indigenous nations around the lake that helped protect or restore human and natural environments. WTIP’s educational and entertaining radio feature called “Lake Superior Project” has informed many people in Grand Marais and around the lake about the issues faced in the basin and what people can do to minimize their impacts.
Lissa Radke, director of the Lake Superior Binational Forum, said the judges “recognized your radio station’s unique ‘Lake Superior Project’ radio features as a creative, educational, and long-lasting tool that informs listeners and supporters about Lake Superior issues, people, and places. The extended activities such as an art program, film festival, and other outreach programs effectively helped connect people to the human and natural environments of the Lake Superior basin in meaningful ways.”
WTIP joins almost 80 others in the U.S. and Canada who have received awards over the last 10 years, and the Binational Forum honors the station’s commitment to bringing original programming that makes a difference to the health of the world’s largest lake.
“The goal of the Lake Superior Project has been to inform the public about the myriad of critical issues facing our lake,“ Kelly Schoenfelder, WTIP’s program director and producer of “The Lake Superior Project,” said. “We are so excited to see the positive impact of the project, and we are so honored to be recognized for being a part of keeping Lake Superior healthy.”
