On Wednesday, July 18, WTIP radio will kick off its summer membership drive.
The first day of the drive will include a full day of locally produced programming; beginning with DayBreak at 7 a.m. Afternoon news and music programming will culminate with a remote broadcast from the 41st annual Gunflint Trail Canoe Races on Gunflint Lake. Hosts Joe Friedrichs and Rhonda Silence will be on the air from 5 to 7:30 p.m., reporting live from the races.
Gunflint Trail Canoe Races is a family-oriented fundraiser that benefits the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. Race spokesman, Bob Baker Sr. of Gunflint Lake, notes, “the Canoe Races are a true expression of how our Gunflint Trail community works together to make living in the wilderness better and better each year, for residents and visitors alike.”
This is the second time that WTIP has broadcast remotely from the races. Celebrating WTIP’s 20th year on the air, the 20 More! Summer Membership Drive will continue from July 18 to noon on July 24. In honor of the station’s 20th anniversary, programming throughout the drive will feature a number of past and present program hosts, memories from the early days of WTIP, lunch and live music under the tent on July 19, 20, and 23, as well as local programming — 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
