If you are one of the many WTIP North Shore Community Radio listeners who enjoy hearing youthful voices on the radio, you are in luck. WTIP has received two grants for the specific purpose of getting more kids on air.

WTIP’s youth radio project is funded by grants from the Northland Foundation and the Knight Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. It is designed to “provide local youth with enhanced opportunities for self-exploration, self-expression, and community involvement by promoting their unique perspectives and highlighting their valuable contributions.

“Youth are such an important part of the community,” said WTIP’s executive director Deb Benedict. “It’s important to us to welcome youth on board and help them use the medium of radio to express themselves.”

The project is collaboration with School District 166. There are currently nine students participating in the project, led by Michael McHugh. They are Gabe Bethke, Hayden Goettl, Danny Lunde, Bailey Morrison, Cece Olsen, Erik Peterson, Sebastian Schnobrich, Kayla Stacy and Molly Zafft.

Over the next few months, they will research, produce and edit feature stories for broadcast, and create and maintain a project webpage. “This is a great opportunity for area youth,” said Project Director Michael McHugh. “These students are pursuing topics that are of interest to them and they’re learning valuable skills.”
