Writers thank Mike Kunshier for his years of service

While we do not presume to speak for others, we are confident that all present and past members of Gunflint Hills Golf Course as well as regular visitors will join us in thanking Mike Kunshier for 27 years of wonderful service as golf course superintendent. Dwain Staples once rapped the back of a wooden church pew and declared, “Mike could grow grass right there!”

Given the resources and physical conditions under which he worked we could not agree more. Anyone who has tried a garden or lawn in Cook County knows the challenge of bringing in anything green, yet year after year Mike kept the Gunflint Hills course in terrific shape. He treated the course and equipment as if they were his own and wisely spent the course budget as if the money were his as well.

Mike was intensely and justifiably proud of the golf course. Members and guests were treated as friends. It was always a challenge and always fun to play Gunflint and we will miss you Mike. Thanks so much for your many years of hard work and your dedication to the course and the game.
