First off, let me say that I don’t know much about log rolling. I also don’t know much about the relationship between the county and the YMCA. But I think it’s sad that the pool at the Y is no longer accommodating the log rolling team. An established program with an active group of volunteer organizers/coaches, and kids that love the sport and want to participate in it, shouldn’t be locked out.
When I first started coming to Grand Marais in the early 60’s, I remember seeing the harbor full of logs. We’ve had and continue to have a vital timber industry in northeast Minnesota. If this isn’t a community that embraces an offshoot of that, I don’t know where it would be? If YMCAs in Wisconsin encourage and support log rolling, there must be a way to make it happen in Grand Marais.
