Writer loves the new portion of the Gitchi-Gami bike trail

On Labor Day weekend, my wife and I camped at the Grand Marais City Campground. Of course, we had a wonderful time. One afternoon I biked the Gitchi Gami State Trail from the campground west to the Cutface wayside rest. It was a distance of five miles, along Highway 61. It is a beautiful hard surface trail, just completed by the Minnesota Highway Department. I met walkers and bike riders, of all ages. Two passed me by with those new electric assist bikes. I felt like it just wasn’t fair, since they made much better time than I. Along the way, I stopped at the bridge over Fall Creek. It certainly is a well constructed and beautiful bridge, where you can get an up-close view of the 20-foot falls and of the lake. There was little more than a trickle of water coming over the falls. But I am sure by next spring the falls will look just gorgeous. Also, along the way you can get a good view of alligator rock and great views of Lake Superior. So, enjoy a ride or walk along this very nice Cook County asset.
