Garry Gamble seems inspired by the song “Amazing Grace”, a poem by Newton put to a melody composed by Excel. My view differs. My first introduction to the tune was as a child taking piano lessons. I loved the melody, as who doesn’t love a waltz? Dance around the room. This was tainted when I learned the words. No, I would not admit to being “a wretch”. Nor was I ever “blind” nor “fearful” as to be pitied. Don’t make me say those words! Ugly!
The poem scenario resembles those abusive relationships where one is deliberately made to feel deficient and unworthy only to be granted a reprieve if one submits to the perpetrator. And one is supposed to feel gratitude for this?
Avoid the martyr or hero worship, which the words promote. Just enjoy a waltz to the beautiful tune, and toss aside the demeaning religious delusions.
Respectfully, Geri Jensen, Grand Marais
