I did give Garry Gamble’s Do You Know? column of April 6 “educating” the News-Herald readership on WTIP’s Joe Fredrick’s interview with county administrator Jeff Cadwell a cursory reading but did not follow up on it. I am very grateful that WTIP did provide a follow up article on April 12 on Boreal.org. I urge everyone to read it (and listen to the full interview available with one click) if they would like a more balanced, reasonable understanding. The article is titled WTIP Shares Full Context of Interview With County Administrator.
Fredrick interviewed Cadwell on April 1 covering “a wide array of local issues . . .during the conversation that lasted more than 17 minutes.” Also, according to the article, “ . . .Gamble quoted from the WTIP interview at length . . .without the full context of what was said.” WTIP closes its article with: WTIP works hard to be civil and respectful while reporting on difficult or controversial subjects. To have our content deliberately, selectively quoted to support a certain slant is not in keeping with our mission to provide accurate and fair coverage of important local issues.
In closing I’d like to express my disappointment in the News- Herald for running a column for several years that began with a stated “educational” mission by Mr. Gamble after he lost his bid to be a county commissioner. That column seems, in my opinion, to have become a fee-free promotional piece for a currently undeclared future candidate. Again, I will express my gratitude and also my continued support to WTIP and Boreal for the work they are doing.
