Writer admires the fortitude and longevity of Birkie contestants

Congrats to the three gentlemen who completed a “…. race to glory” virtual ski of the American Berkebeiner and were high-lighted on the front page of Section B of the News Herald: Eckel, Horak and Kennedy. These are three men with many many miles of cross-country skiing on their skies and quite a few years of life behind them. It was reported that for this ski they chose to ski the Sugar Bush trails, specifically the Picnic Loop and then other loops. Our family and friends skied Sugar Bush trails for many years. We skied the Picnic loop but had a different name for it, “Ain’t no…Picnic”, so skied it very seldom but greatly enjoyed the other loops and the connection to the Onion River area of trails. This among the numerous other cross-country ski trails is one of the many attractions in this area. We also admire those long-distance skiers of any age. Bob Reid, Lutsen
