Writer admires Lonnie Dupre’s decision making when faced with life and death situations

Your headline (January 22), After 20 years, Lonnie Dupre will return to Greenland, caught my eye. Just last month, Lonnie spoke at UW-Eau Claire, Barron County Campus in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. After reading about his many adventures in the CCNH over the years, I was determined to meet him and hear his narrative about his Arctic explorations. Following his presentation, I naively asked if he had ever had a close call. With a smile he said, “Just about every day!” That comment inspired me to purchase his book, Life on Ice — 25 Years of Arctic Exploration. This was one of those “can’t-put-it-down” books, and I finished it in one day. Close calls may be a way of life for Lonnie, but his survival skills and experience enable his decisions on when to turn back rather than continuing on a path of certain death.
