Fisherman’s Picnic is a time of fun and frivolity, but there are moments that offer reflection, such as special worship services. There are two opportunities for joyful worship this year.
Worship on the waterfront
Cornerstone Community Church has been holding a special waterfront worship service on the Sunday of Fisherman’s Picnic since 2004. Everyone is invited to gather at the Harbor Park stage at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 7 for worship with Pastor Dale McIntire, including gospel music performed by Cornerstone church members.
All are welcome. Attendees might want to bring lawn chairs—the benches in Harbor Park have been filled to overflowing in recent years.
Son’s Rays Shine!
Also on Sunday, the Son’s Rays choir will be performing at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. The choir is a reunion of the talented women who performed together while students in Cook County. The title of the concert is Shine! and will feature many of the songs they sang together 45 years ago.
A special tribute will feature two of the choir’s parents who will represent the many talented and generous parents who helped through the years. Alice Powell will share some of her amazing works of art. Gene Glader will share his story of how faith comes into play as events crash into life and cause drastic change.
A free will offering will be taken at the Son’s Rays concert to benefit two projects. The first is the Cook County Domestic Violence project, and the second is Equip Nepal, which was started by one of the former Son’s Rays, Jan Eliasen Viren and her husband, Bud.
