Workshops: one for builders/ one for homeowners

Mark Friday, January 24 as a day to listen, learn and discuss issues relating to building and energy efficiency. The builder workshop is all day, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. DOLI continuing education credits are available and registration and payment is required. (Lunch and snacks will be included.) The homeowner/public workshop for anyone planning to build or remodel is Friday evening beginning at 7:00 p.m. Donations will be accepted. Both workshops will be at the Community Center in Grand Marais.

Don Sivigny, State Energy Specialist for the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry and Richard Stone, Extension Educator in Housing Technology with the University of Minnesota, will tag team a building workshop for building professionals (contractors, tradesmen, plumbers, heating contractors and building officials). Sivigny will cover building science basics of ventilation, moisture and insulation in the context of energy efficiency. This will include properly sizing mechanical systems to the calculated heat loss of a structure, an investigation of air barriers and make-up air and new 2012 building code requirements. Stone will discuss framing as it relates to energy and building pressures. He will bring a House of Pressure model that can demonstrate different air infiltration scenarios showing causes and effects of air movement as it relates to the building envelope.

The bonus session for homeowners and the general public will be offered in the evening including demonstrations with the House of Pressure and an explanation of the 2012 building code in a round table discussion format. There will be time for questions and answers. This workshop is an excellent opportunity for those planning to build or remodel. Learn what’s involved and consider perspectives for decision making.

These events support Cook County Local Energy Project’s (CCLEP) residential energy efficiency program (REEP), a two-year pilot project to promote energy efficient savings and improved building performance in Cook County. This project is made possible in part with grants from University of MN Extension, Lutheran Community Foundation, Cook County Community Fund and support from Grand Marais PUC, SMMPA, Arrowhead Cooperative, Buck’s Hardware Hank, Isak Hansen, Inc., Superior Lumber and Sports and Sawtooth Lumber. Partners are CCLEP, Cook County Extension, Cook County Higher Education and North House Folk School.
