Things are never quiet at the Grand Marais Playhouse and summer finds us scrambling to get everything done. Treasure Island
just finished its run last weekend and now we are getting ready for the upcoming summer productions. Cole Porter’s You Never
Know
is next on the agenda with opening weekend July 29-August 1 and again on the following weekend. You Never
Know
is a musical comedy filled with delightful Cole Porter songs and dancing. The band for this production is coming along beautifully and Emily Schulte will be in town next week as a choreographer for the show.
In addition to enjoying You
Never Know,
an art show will be at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts during the show’s run. Entitled Sun-Kissed
Paintings,
this is a show featuring the work of women whom many of you might know— Alice Powell, Jan Attridge, Carolyn Sevareid, Emily Ulhorn and Emma Bradley. Come enjoy the art show and then attend the play!
The Grand Marais Playhouse is offering two extraordinary opportunities in July and August. First, on July 20 – 21 there will be two workshops on costuming for the theater. Visiting artist Pam Knourek of the North Carolina School of the Arts will be teaching techniques for transforming modern clothes to period styles for men and women as well as sharing some building-for-the-theater techniques and tricks. Session one of the workshops will be a transformation workshop and the second session will cover flat patterning for women’s bodices, skirts and sleeves. Knourek has had experience in theater, film, television and advertising and is sure to be great teacher. Thecost is $10 per session.
Doug Livesay will be offering a workshop on August 3 – 4 that will teach soundboard operation for live performances. The cost is $25 for the workshop. The workshop will be informative classroom instruction and the class will actually set up for a live performance. Ken Johnson, a Grand Marais native who now lives in Montana, will be performing on August 4 at 7:00 p.m. Johnson is sure to entertain everyone with his original music consisting of a combination of blues, folk, funk and soul. So sign up for this workshop and help get ready for this concert! Thisis an extremely informative class for anyone interested in operating soundboards and the class can lead to being on the Playhouse’s list of approved sound technicians. You can register for this class by calling the Playhouse.
Happy Birthday to the Playhouse! Of course you’ve probably already marked your calendar for July 25, the night of our birthday party. We are having a BBQ at 6:00 p.m. with a concert featuring Cavern Beat starting at 7:00 p.m. This birthday bash will take place outside, right behind the Playhouse. Many of the Playhouse’s alumni are returning for this special night, but everyone is invited to a night filled with birthday cake, great food and music and dancing. We know how to throw a party and we hope you will come!
