For many years, students in Ivy Church’s college writing class have presented “The Night of the Notorious” to showcase their writing and research skills. The topic this year is more practical, but still compelling. This year the College in the Schools seniors will present “The Working Class of 2016” on Jan. 11.
Starting at 7 p.m. in the Arrowhead Center for the Arts, 13 seniors from the Class of 2016 will be offering job advice to other teenagers based on their research, personal experience, and local interviews. The students hope other teens can get some tips for how to land a good summer job.
Some seniors are ready to debate the relative benefits of family businesses, franchises, and independent small businesses. Others will report on gender dominance in certain jobs and safety risks in others. Unlike many counties, Cook County has jobs available for almost any teenager looking for work.
As a group, the College Writing students have held a variety of jobs: at gift stores, gas stations, restaurants, motels, and construction sites. As summer workers saving for a car or for college, they are also gaining invaluable on-the-job experience.
Introduction to College Writing is a three-credit course offered by the University of Minnesota- Duluth in partnership with Cook County Schools under the College in the Schools program.
