Work will start on school bus garage

Cook County School District I.S.D. 166 will be a busy place this summer with projects high and low needing to be completed before the next school year begins.

Pending school board approval on Thursday, June 15, which is all but certain, the leaning and tattered school bus garage is finally going to be replaced.

Four bids were opened on June 8 for the school bus garage project with S & C Masonry-Concrete, Inc. the low bidder at $741,900. S & C is a local company owned by Rick Crawford of Devil Track Lake.

The preliminary project budget prepared for the school by Architectural Resources Inc. (ARI) was $871,000, which made the low bid below the initial budget.

Two other local companies won bids to work on the bus garage. County Plumbing was awarded the mechanical contractor bid at $105,000 and Kevin Mackey was awarded the electrical contractor bid at $36,000.

The work must be completed by October 31, 2017.

Other big building projects at the school for the summer include re-roofing over the culinary arts and the science wings. A new gym floor is being installed in the elementary gym and a new floor is being put in the cafeteria. Six classrooms will also get new tile floors.

Security cameras throughout the school will be updated and the elementary school gym will be painted as well as several classrooms, said Tom Nelson, facilities and transportation director of the school.

On top of that, all of the summer cleaning and maintenance work must be done, said Nelson.
