Soon enough, there will be a large three-acre wooded area for your dog(s) to run and play in.
Led by Cathy Quinn, a group of about a dozen volunteers spent hours of their time Saturday, July 2, working on the new dog park which will be located along the old Gunflint Trail below the emergency run-off road by the water tower.
The day was cool, relatively bug free because there was a slight breeze; it was a perfect day to work outside.
Mike Carlson snipped small trees and brush. Becky Bartol weed-whipped. Barb Hedemann ran a brush cutter. Ron Schlinze moved brush with a half dozen other volunteers who were also doing a variety of tasks. When the workday ended a lot of brush had been cleared, vegetation weed whipped, small trees snipped, and some larger fallen trees were moved from the area that will soon become the local dog park for the Grand Marais area.
The work-day was held largely to prepare for the installation of the fence, the majority of which will be put in place on July 11.
With the parking lot nearly complete the areas for small dogs and large dogs is starting to take shape, although there is still much to do. That said, there will be a walking area on the inside perimeter of the park, but the forest will remain, only the dead trees of hazardous trees will be taken down.
Meanwhile, said Quinn, “Our fundraising efforts continue. We need over $80,000 to build this community space. In order for the dog park to be viable we need to ensure that Go Dog’s immediate operating expenses are covered as well. In other words, raising funds for the project build-out is only part of our initiative; we have to account for other upcoming expenses. If you haven’t donated already or would like to increase your donation, visit our website at www.godognorthshore.org/donate.”
So far more than $70,000 has been raised.
On Sunday, July 3, Quinn and a helper were running brush through a chipper.
Once the dog park is open it will be maintained by Go Dog North Shore volunteers.
