The cold storage building at Fire Hall 1 on the Gunflint Trail will again become a concert hall for the annual “Woods, Winds, Strings, and a Little Jazz” music presentation. Many local musicians, some returning, some new to the performance will take part in what has become a popular event for those who enjoy an afternoon of beautiful music in a North Woods setting. The concert will take place at 4 p.m. on Aug. 18, followed by a reception in the A. Paul and Carol Schaap community center next door.
This year the concert will include solos by Philis Anderson, oboe; Anna Nekola, oboe; Fred Anderson, guitar; Sue Anderson, violin; Eric Anderson, euphonium; plus performances by two local high school musicians, Ashleigh Precord, flute, and Jack Willis, trumpet. Several ensembles will also participate, including vocal ensemble SVEA: Rose Arrowsmith DeCoux, Tina Hegg Raway, Elunia Steckelberg, and Erika Ternes.
The Borealis Brass Quintet will also perform. Members of that ensemble are Don Grant, trumpet; Robert Reed, trumpet; Eric Anderson, euphonium; Alyssa Hedstrom, french horn; and Dave Coleman, trombone.
Also playing is a trumpet trio: Don Grant, Robert Reed, and Paul Dragsten. Sky Blue Jazz Ensemble will perform, and those members are: Mike DeBevec, piano; Mike Roth, string bass; Karina Roth, vocal; Erik Hahn, sax; and Thomas Stamps, percussion and vocal.
Tickets can be purchased by contacting Patsy Coleman at 313- 673-6202, or pbcoleman529@gmail.com. Prices are $20/adult, $5/child between 5 and 18. (Children under 5 are free.)
