Wood from elms will be turned into useful items

When the elm trees came down last week in Grand Marais, some of the wood was saved and will be repurposed, said Cook County/Grand Marais Economic Development Authority Director (EDA) Mary Somnis.

“The Creative Economy Collaborative (CEC) is going to create a process to find out who is interested in making something from the wood,” she said.

Started in 2015, the CEC’s goal is “Accelerating the development of arts and culture as a key prosperity driver contributing to the social and economic vitality of Cook County.” The CEC is working with the city of Grand Marais on the Highway 61 project, and agreed to take responsibility for the wood, Somnis said.

It has been suggested that benches will be fashioned from the logs, but the CEC has tossed out other ideas as well: bowls, cutting boards, spoons, planters, statues, etc.
