Women’s right to choose alive and well in Minnesota

Women are not losing any rights to abortions as claimed in Jeri Jensen’s letter to the editor.

Almost 10,000 abortions were performed in 2018; women do have the right to control their bodies and family size in Minnesota. About 12,500 women received Woman’s Right to Know informed consent information, and after learning about the risks and alternatives, 2,500 women chose to not have an abortion. The state’s 1981 parental notification law resulted in abortions on minors going from 2,327 in 1980 to 221 in 2018 – these two laws benefit everyone.

There is a lawsuit filed by two abortion practitioners in Ramsey County District Court, which seeks to strike down the following five Minnesota statutes:

· Woman’s Right to Know, which ensures informed consent prior to abortion.

· Parental notification, which ensures that parents are notified before a minor undergoes abortion.

· Physician-only requirement, which requires that people who perform abortions be doctors.

· Fetal disposal law requiring the remains of aborted children be treated in a dignified manner.

· Abortion data reporting, which ensures that basic data about abortion in Minnesota is collected. The numbers used in this letter are the result of this statute, which informs you and me about how abortion is practiced in our state. Please contact your representative and tell him how you feel about these laws, which makes a better life for all of us.
