The 39-year-old Waupaca, Wisconsin, woman who abandoned her six-year-old daughter alongside Highway 61 in Grand Portage on December 10, will have a review hearing on trial on February 22.
Two grand Portage men, Daniel Deschampe Sr. and Delwyn Wilson, found the child standing barefoot alongside the highway. Her mother, Jaydin Daniel Pankow, had abandoned the girl without proper winter clothing, leaving her without a jacket, shoes, socks, or hat. According to authorities, Pankow told them that God had instructed her to leave her child alongside the highway to save her.
Deschampe and Wilson gave the little girl a pair of socks and kept her warm until responders arrived. The two men were honored by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa for their quick action to rescue the child.
But this isn’t the first time Jaydin Danielle Pankow has been in trouble for absconding with her children.
In May 2019, Pankow was accused of taking two children out of state without their fathers’ permission.
She was arrested in North Dakota and charged with two felony counts for interfering with child custody.
The fathers of the children, aged 9 and 4, called the police after they couldn’t contact their kids when it was time for them to have custody.
Pankow’s mother notified authorities that her daughter had called her, saying she was lost and didn’t know where she was. Authorities pinged Pankow’s cellphone and located her near Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A warrant was drafted for Pankow’s arrest and she was picked up near Fargo, North Dakota. Both children were safe.
At the time, Pankow’s mother told Wisconsin authorities that her daughter suffered from mental health issues.
Following her arrest in Cook County, Pankow was held in Cook County jail. On Monday, December 14, she appeared in District Court in Grand Marais and was ordered by Judge Michael Cuzzo to undergo a competency evaluation, with a review hearing scheduled for February 22, 2021.
If Pankow is convicted of the crime she is charged with, she is looking at five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.
