Peter Smerud has been named the executive director of Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Finland, Minn.
Smerud has been with the center since its days in Isabella, Minn., when the facility was simply known as the Environmental Learning Center or ELC. Most of Smerud’s 25-year career has been at Wolf Ridge, where he has held positions and carried out duties in nearly all aspects of center operations. His educational background is in biology and adventure education, yet his skills managing a nonprofit business of 60 employees and related fundraising expertise has been developed in the last 10 years as the center’s assistant director. His undergraduate degree is from Concordia College in Moorhead, preceding master’s coursework at North Dakota State University and the University of Utah.
Wolf Ridge serves more than 15,000 students each year on a 2,000-acre campus overlooking the North Shore of Lake Superior, approximately 70 miles northeast of Duluth. For more information on Wolf Ridge ELC or its programs, visit wolf-ridge.org.
