Wolf/moose studies? Enough already!

For over 63 years, scientists from the Michigan Technological University (MTU), with permission from the National Park Service, have been studying the moose/wolf relationship at Isle Royale.

Isle Royale National Park was chosen as the ideal laboratory for the study because of its unique wilderness environment insulated from the presence and influence of man. At least the men who don’t buzz them with aircraft, chase them with snowmobiles, terrorize them with tranquilizers, and force radio collars around their necks.

After 63 years of “scientific study” with this “experiment,” I think the problem resolved itself. It’s over! Project completed! Moose won 1,250 over wolves 3.

But no. It’s not over!

The National Park Service wants to study the situation for just a few more years introducing “foliage and grass” into the equation. I think the study is complete. Just analyze the reports and scientific papers that MTU has submitted over 63 years plus the summary that will be concluded shortly, I presume. The answers to the questions the Park Service wants to study must be in that pile of reports somewhere. I don’t think that the Park Service or MTU should be given an extension until their final report is in.

Give the poor animals (and us) a break. Leave them alone.
