The 2014 Minnesota wolf hunting and trapping season opened Saturday, November 8 and after six days 45 wolves were taken in the Northwest zone and 32 were taken in the Northeast Zone, which includes Cook County.
A two-day season was held November 8-9 for the East Central zone and three wolves were killed.
With an estimated 470 wolf packs and an estimated 2,423 wolves in the state, the DNR’s goal is to use the hunting/trapping season to ensure long term survival of wolves while addressing conflicts between wolves and man.
The early season runs from November 8 to November 16 or November 23, depending upon where one is rifle/bow hunting. The late season begins November 29 and runs though Saturday, January 31, 2015. Firearms and bow and arrow are legal to use in the early season while traps and snares are allowed in the late season.
This year the DNR issued 3,800 hunting permits, 500 more than last year.
Hunters can take 83 wolves in the early season for the Northwest zone and 37 in the Northeast zone. Counting both early and late seasons, the DNR set a harvest quota of 250 wolves for 2014, up from 230 from last year
