Winding down the summer at the Senior Center

As temperatures are cooling off and the summer is winding down, I find myself returning to a familiar place of employment that is very dear to my heart doing the work that I love.

After a difficult year in 2016, I made a decision for personal reasons to leave my position at the Senior Center but on August 6, 2018, I was given the opportunity to return as the Programs and Services coordinator. I never imagined I would be back in this position but I feel truly blessed that my journey had led me back here. I look forward to working with this community again and to being surrounded by all the amazing people that I get to cross paths with while doing the work I love.

I do anticipate doing some of the programs I did before, also continuing programs that are in place now along with creating new ones. Below are some of the Senior happenings that are coming up:

There is a group at the Senior Center called Healthy Living, and when they get together—this is one of my favorite times of the week!

The group meets every Monday at 1:30 p.m. and is open to anyone. The purpose of this time together is to create a safe place that enriches the mind by providing a gathering place for people to come to share good food, communicate about topics in life, build community support and friendships with each other, learn healthy tips, maybe play a game or do a craft and always to share a lot of laughter.

If you would like to know more, please call the Senior Center at 387-2660 or drop in Mondays at 1:30 p.m. and join the group.

Our next monthly lunch outing is on August 29 and we will travel to Justine’s for lunch at the Gunflint Lodge. Whether you’ve ever been here before or not, you will absolutely want to join us for some amazing North Woods cuisine and surrounded by glorious views of Gunflint Lake.

After lunch, we will stop for a visit at the Chik Wauk Museum, which is located on beautiful Lake Saganaga. While there we will learn about the Gunflint Trail’s prehistoric beginnings including the people that helped create our rural community.

The Senior Center received donations for the cost of entrance into the museum so the only charge for the trip will be $5 for the bus fare, and lunch at your own expense. We will be leaving the Senior Center at 10:30 a.m. This trip is filling up fast and its one you don’t want to miss so call us at the Senior Center and reserve your spot.

The Book Club meets the third Thursday every month between 1 and 2 p.m. at the Senior Center. This group is open to the public and welcomes everyone. I had the opportunity to sit in with this group last week while they were discussing the most recent book and look forward to continuing to join them.

I encourage everyone to be a part of the next club meeting on Thursday, September 20 where the book they will be discussing is “This is your life, Harriet Chance” by Jonathan Evison.

On Thursday, September 20 the book they will be discussing is “This is your life, Harriet Chance” by Jonathan Evison. It is about a 78-year-old lady, Harriet Chance, who impulsively sets sail on a cruise her late husband had planned. She hoped it would be a voyage leading to a new lease on life but her journey brings leads her into her past in surprising ways. You can pick up a copy of this book at the Grand Marais Library.

On Wednesday, August 29 Steve Deschene and Marjori Bottlia will be at the Senior Center for a Medicare presentation along with individual counseling appointments.

This is a free service and can help you better utilize the Medicare system.

The presentation on Medicare fraud is from 10 to 11 a.m. The individual counseling appointments will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please contact the Senior Linkage Line at 1-800-333- 2433 Ext. 81008 to schedule your appointment

Again, I am extremely thankful to be back at the Senior Center and look forward to serving this community I love so much and as always am open to creating new programs, services, trips, etc. – so please stop in and visit with me and share any ideas you may have.

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Cook County Senior Center, courtesy of Programs and Services Coordinator Jes Rodne.
