Wind energy is available from local power providers

In response to Vince Ekroot’s letter to the editor in the February 1 issue of the Cook County News Herald inquiring about wind power as a source of electricity in Cook County. Unfortunately the North Shore terrain does not lend itself well to windmill electricity production in the way that southwest Minnesota or areas of many other states do.

There have been, and are, a few examples of wind produced electricity in Cook County however, and the interested reader is encouraged to track down current and former owners of windmills for their relative success and other details.

Perhaps more important to know is that both the Grand Marais Public Utilities Commission and Arrowhead Electric offer their customers the option of purchasing all or a portion of their electricity from wind-generated sources.

The cost to do so from the Grand Marais PUC is very minimal, and interested residents of Grand Marais are encouraged to call the Grand Marais city offices (387-1848) to obtain more information, and hopefully sign up.

Arrowhead Electric charges about an additional $1.50/100 kw, or in the range of $5.00 – $7.00/month for a typical home. Arrowhead’s phone number is 218-663-7239, or toll-free 1-800-864-3744; or one can go to their website for further information and to sign up, www.arrowhead.coop.

Of the utmost importance however is whatever we can all do to reduce our dependence on coal and other fossil fuel production, we should do. We all have a deep moral responsibility to the health and survival of our fellow human beings, and to save this fragile planet Earth.
