Will Surbaugh places ninth in Lutsen 99er

Stages Cycling Lutsen 99er draws big field of cyclists

On a picture-perfect day for a bike race, the Stage Cycling Lutsen 99er went off without a hitch on Saturday, June 26, drawing just over 2,000 contestants who competed in either the Lutsen 99er, 69er, 49er or 25-mile events that threaded through the rugged Sawtooth Mountain range, backroads and some trails.

99er

Wearing bib 337, Will Surbaugh, 19, of Grand Marais, placed ninth in a highly competitive field of 587 riders taking part in the 99-mile race.

Will clocked 5:55:20.

The race was won by Stephen Hyde, 34, of Easthampton, Massachusetts, who placed first with a finish time of 5:34:46. Ryan Sellner, 18, of Circle Pines, Minnesota, was second with a finish time of 5:35:16 and Chris Stevens, 43, of New Richmond, Wisconsin, was third with a completion time of 5:37:11.

In the women’s 99-mile division, Raylyn Nuss, 30, of Lake Saint Louis, Montana, placed first with a finish time of 6:00:46. Anna Luckow, 28, of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota, was second with a finish time of 6:36:34 and Risa Hustad, 30, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, was third with a time of 6:48:50.

Jim Joynes, 56, Grand Marais, placed 46th overall and second in his age group with a time of 6:21.01.

Shanie Joynes, Grand Marais, 50, placed first in her age bracket and ninth overall in the women’s race, completing the course in 7:33:00.

Molly O’Neil of Lutsen, placed 40th in the women’s bracket, crossing the line in 9:59:07.

69er

For the men’s 69-mile division, Gordon Hilleque, 43, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, placed first with a finish time of 4:24:46. Chad Millner, 45, of Chanhassen, Minnesota, secured second place with a finish time of 4:25:32. Chris Fisher, 43, of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota,placed third in the division with a completion time of 4:26:06.

Dylan Dragswiek, 42, Grand Marais, placed 32nd, finishing in 5:10:41. Max Wahlers, 59, Grand Marais, placed 22nd in his age bracket, crossing the line 5:48:04.

Jake Bailey, 61, Lutsen, finished 9th in his age bracket, completing the race in 5:55:39.

For the women’s 49-mile division, Samantha Klepperich, 18, of Chaska, Minnesota, placed first in 3:10:06. Dellia Barrett, 17, of Victoria, Minnesota, was second with a finish time of 3:12:43 and Chloe Leege, 16, of Iron River, Wisconsin, placed third with a time of 3:13:46.

There were no local women competing in the 69er.

49er

Some 447 riders took part in the 49-mile race. The top local finisher was Jonathan Hedstrom, 43, of Grand Marais. Jonathan placed 124th overall, clocking 3:40:35.

Bill Lane, 66, of Tofte placed 22nd in his age bracket, completing the course in 4:29:43.

Tim Kennedy, 71, Grand Marais, placed 4th in his age group, finishing with a time of 4;39:43.

David Eckel, 62, Grand Marais, took 34th in his age group, finishing with a time of 5:16:21.

Jeff Latz, 68, Lutsen, was 37th in his age group. Jeff rode the course in 5:41:27.

There were no local women entered in the 49er however Madi Joynes, 24, Duluth, the daughter of Jim Joynes, placed second in her age group with a time of 4:01:53.

The women’s 49-mile champion was Samantha Klepperich, 18, of Chaska, Minnesota, who had a finish time of 3:10:06. Dellia Barrett, 17, of Victoria, Minnesota, was second with a time of 3:12:43. Chloe Leege, 16, of Iron River, Wisconsin. placed third in 3:13:46.

Chase Sams, 17, of Duluth, Minnesota, won the 49-mile race with a time of 2:49:57. Steven Yore, 52, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, was second in 2:50:28 and Jedd Baunwarth, 36, of Waconia, Minnesota, and Steve Stocker, 49, of River Falls, Wisconsin, tied for third with a completion time of 2:50:51.

25-mile race

Danica Barrett, 14, of Lutsen led local women finishers with a time of 2:02:51. She took 11th in her age bracket.

Lynne Wittala, 60, Tofte, was 14th in her age group, crossing the finish line in 2:04:52.

Martina Mellang, 35, Lutsen, finished 28th in 2:12:12.

Claire Lavigne, Grand Marais, placed 32nd in her age bracket, finishing with a time of 2:13:28.

Jerry Wilkes, 78, Grand Marais, placed 137 with a time of 2:34:37.

Jeff Denniston, 66, Lutsen, took 106 in his age group and finished with a time of 3:01:32.

For the women’s 25-mile division, Dorothea Kramer, 15, of Duluth, Minnesota, was first with a time of 1:37:35. Wendy Stocker, 49, of River Falls, Wisconsin placed second with a finish time of 1:47:30, and Megan Cosgrove, 41, of Hudson, Wisconsin, finished third with a completion time of 1:50:26.

For the men’s 25-mile division, Eyob Yore, 13, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, placed first with a finish time of 1:30:12. Eddie MacHolda, 62, of Excelsior, Minnesota, was second in 1:34:39, and Charlie Meyer, 15, of Saint Paul, Minnesota, took third with a finishing time of 1:36:38.

The Stages Cycling Lutsen 99er, is owned and produced by Life Time, which is headquartered in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

Riders start and finish at Lutsen Ski Resort.

“The Lutsen 99er has always been about family, friends, community and camaraderie. After a year off, Life Time and Stages Cycling are incredibly proud to welcome everyone back to the Lutsen Mountains — from 35 states and four countries—for this annual favorite tradition,” said Peter Spencer, Event Director at Life Time.
