Cook County High School basketball fans will have their eyes and ears tuned to Gopher basketball games this upcoming season after the recent announcement that the CCHS all-time leading scorer Will Ramberg has transferred to the University of Minnesota and has joined the Gopher basketball program.
Will Ramberg’s jersey number will be number 25 for the Golden Gophers this basketball season.
Following his 2019 graduation from CCHS Will attended McGill University in Montreal where he saw action in 10 games. He started the last playoff game and scored 12 points and pulled down three rebounds.
McGill didn’t play basketball last year during the coronavirus epidemic, and Will worked on his game here in the county, often at the YMCA when it was open.
During his senior year of high school, the 6-5 guard averaged 27 points and 14 rebounds per game. He ended his high school career with 1,346 points and was named all-conference his sophomore, junior and senior years. During his junior year Will averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds per game. Although the point totals seem outrageous, Will was a pass first, shoot second player. Many of points came on put-backs from misses by his teammates. He was also an outstanding defender, and not afraid to mix it up underneath the basket. Hardworking and unselfish are two good words to describe Will Ramberg.
Now considered a sophomore, Will played in an elite basketball league in Wisconsin and averaged 24 points and seven rebounds per game. During the elite league play Will averaged 88 percent on his free throws, an important mark for someone who likes to slash and take the ball to the hole. New Gopher Coach Ben Johnson discovered Will when Will attended one of his basketball camps. It is a virtual certainty that Will Ramberg is the first Cook County High School basketball player to don a Gopher basketball uniform.
Will’s parents are Katheryn and Stephen Ramberg, Grand Marais. His sister Louise is off to attend her freshman year of school out west. Meanwhile, Will plans to major in Economics at the University of Minnesota.
