Congratulations to Ms. Livingston’s third grade class at Sawtooth Elementary School for their successful Readathon service project. They hoped to raise $400 to purchase a Wii and accessories for the Senior Center. In fact they raised double their goal and now plan to get a big screen television, too. Watch for the kick-off event in April, Ms. Livingston’s class will teach folks at the Senior Center to use the Wii. We are looking forward to a new way to keep folks active while having fun.
We plan to keep minds active, too. Trivia on Tuesdays started on March 2. This month at the Senior Center, we are trying different trivia games to discover what will work best for us. Join us at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays to test your memory and win prizes.
We are continuing to invite prominent citizens to have lunch at the Senior Center. It is a fun time to share a meal and information. This month we will be hosting: Grand Marais Mayor Sue Hakes on Monday, March 8; Grand Marais Public Library Director Linda Chappell on Wednesday, March 10; Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Mary Manning on Monday, March 15; Veterans Service Officer Richard McKenzie on Monday, March 22; and Sheriff Mark Falk on Wednesday, March 24. Each speaker will begin at 11:30 a.m.
Everyone is welcome at these lunches. You may bring your lunch, stop by for a few minutes, or enjoy the Senior Center lunch by calling 387- 2660 before 9:30am for a lunch reservation.
It is time to plan to take a driver safety class. Minnesota adults aged 55 plus receive a 10% auto insurance discount by taking an approved eighthour driver safety class. To maintain the discount a fourhour refresher class must be taken every three years.
The first eight-hour AARP Driver Safety class will be this Saturday, March 6, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., at the Senior Center. For AARP members the class is $17 and $19 for non-members.
Refresher classes will be held monthly through October. The March refresher class will be at the Senior Center on Tuesday, March 16, noon – 4 p.m. Call 387-2660 to register for either class or to ask questions.
There is still time to signup to go on a Senior Center trip. May 2 – 8. We will be traveling south to Iowa on our Senior Center bus. We will spend two days enjoying the handmade crafts and German food in the Amana Colonies. Next we will spend two days at the Pella Tulip Festival, where we will enjoy tulips, traditional Dutch food, entertainment, and crafts.Thetrip is $589 per person (double occupancy) for transportation, six-nights lodging, six continental breakfasts, and tickets to the Tulip Festival.
Our trip north around Lake Superior to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, including a trip on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train, will be August 30 – September 3 Theprice of this trip will be approximately $500 per person (double occupancy) for transportation, four-nights lodging, two breakfasts, and the tour train.
