Interviews are scheduled for our County Administrator position. These people applied for the job knowing full well where on earth Cook County is, knowing how to get here, what the upside of coming could be and also the drawbacks.
They applied so that means they were interested.
When you apply for a job, don’t you expect you may get an interview? You will have to travel; you will need to take time off from a current job to get here; you will travel by plane or car; you will have to eat and sleep and then you may not get the job. That’s the way it works!
But then comes this offer that makes it more like a vacation. Commitment is not “Let’s go see what this adventure brings and chalk it up to a quick get-away.” What are we telling them by throwing money at them to travel on us? Are we suggesting we are wealthy enough that a few thousand dollars don’t matter, it’s pocket change, that we can afford to do this or any other frivolous idea someone comes along with?
If we have to pay someone to come here, what a sad state of affairs we are in and the saddest part is that we didn’t have to offer this in the first place.
What’s next? Fly the family here? Pay for a home until they get settled? Unlimited laundry service and a county car? Of course, these are ridiculous ideas and no one responsible for county money would even consider them. Are you sure?
