“Why treaties matter” exhibit at Grand Portage

A unique opportunity to learn about the importance of treaties and self-government is being offered to local residents and visitors to Grand Portage.

Why Treaties Matter: Self-Government in the Dakota and Ojibwe Nations is a traveling exhibition that helps establish American Indian sovereignty as an ongoing continental reality and provides a vehicle for all Minnesotans to learn new and innovative ways to create community, build sustainable systems, and relate to one another.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Indian Affairs Council, Minnesota Humanities Center and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, will be on display at the Grand Portage Community Building, 54 Upper Road, through Aug. 22. It is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and weekends from 8 a.m. until noon.
